Chinese New Year Celebration @ Blue House

This year we made Chinese New Year dinner at the blue house again, but with a much more intimate party. With 7 peeps and Emil, we had Fat Choi Ho Si (traditional Chinese New Year dish that wishes for getting rich and good things happening), chicken and veggie stir fry noodles, year cake (traditional Chinese New Year dish that wishes for growing taller/ achieving more every year), Susan bought cha siu and siu yuk and OP made egg tarts for dessert.

Dinner was delicious and we had a great time chatting away about relationships. Susan and Peter also got to meet Emil for the first time.

It wasn’t easy to get a group picture where most people look fairly normal. At least this one it looks like Ani is very, very happy.

The Dinner Party

The Dinner Party

It was a good evening of celebration. I still miss celebrating new year in Hong Kong though. One of these years I’d make the trip…

Happy Chinese New Year!

May the year of the rabbit be a prosperous and joyous one

Just Got Back from 4 Days in Taiwan

I must say here that the service in most of the places we have visited in Taipei was excellent. The staffs are always friendly and helpful. Even sellers in street markets and stores are often accommodating and don’t mind that you are just trying things out and not ready to buy. Another thing I noticed also is that there are always people who shout out their store specialty on the streets to get customers. Basically lots of noise every where; everybody’s trying to do business. Quite an interesting scene. Streets are also very clean given that there are hardly any trash cans. Apparently, they have pretty strict and harsh penalties for throwing trash on the streets, petty thefts, and carrying drugs. Additionally, all boys are required to serve in the military for 2 years when they reach 18.

Day 1
We left Hong Kong on Thursday morning for a 4-day visit to Taipei on a group tour. We first headed to Jioufen for a street market in the mountains. The streets are crazy narrow and there were lots of people (in typical Hong Kong/ Taipei fashion). Lots of street snacks (also in typical Taipei fashion) and souveneirs. We snacked on grilled mushrooms and mini sausages, finished off with a beef noodle bowl and (slightly) drunken chicken. There were also stores that sell clogs which are custom fitted. We saw the boss lady binding the sole and strap in with a staple gun. After walking around for an hour, the rain started pouring and it was about time for us to leave. So we took off for Yilan, where we stayed for a night at the 5-star ‘spa’ (i.e. hot spring) resort. They have both indoor (nude) and outdoor (swimsuit) pools. We first tried the indoor pools because it was raining outside, but it turned out to be too hot and kinda boring (there’s nothing to do but sit with other naked ladies; luckily I didn’t have my glasses on). We changed and went outside which turns out to be a lot more fun. There are more pools at different temperature and with different gadgets. My favorite is the rose smelling pool. Smells soooo good :) There was also a pool with jet bed which was quite fun(ny). Another pool is just a regular sit down, but it’s not as intensely hot as the ones indoor so it’s more comfortable. They also have spa fishes which would bite dead skin off your feet. It seems too uncomfortable for me to try. After hot spring, we went to the dinner buffet (our first of 4 through this trip); after which I went off to bed quickly.

Day 2
We kicked off day 2 with a mild hike (walk) to a nearby waterfall. It was raining the night before so it was quite cool and comfortable. The waterfall was nice too. If only it were a little longer. One scary thing is, at the end of the hike, there was a tree branch that broke off and fell which caused a small-medium size rock to fall and almost hit one of the men exercising by the view point. I saw the branch and tried to warn people but they were too busy taking pictures. Lucky no one got hurt. We then returned to the hotel for another breakfast buffet and got ready to return to the city (Taipei). The tour bus dropped us off to my first recent encounter of tourist trap (it’s been years since I was last on a group tour) at the Pearl Exhibition Center where they gave us an hour-long presentation about the greatness of Taiwanese pearls and got ambushed by way too many sales reps pushing us to spend a few thousand NT on pearl stuff. Argh. Big mistake.

We then stopped by Shilin Night Market for a first view before stopping by a hotel for buffet (including hot pot:D) and eventually settling down in Grand Hyatt Hotel by Taipei 101.

Day 3
Day 3 was free time – we get a whole day to go wherever we want. Had an elaborate buffet breakfast at the Grand Hyatt (my favorite was that they have hot soy milk, and, pancakes!) before joining the tour guide to take the MRT (subway) to the famous Shimen street market (which we stayed for just over an hour, as there was little to shop for). We then went to Chiang Kai Shek’s memorial and saw some cheerleading competition thinggy, along with the huge ‘Freedom Square.’ After that we went to Xin Bei Tou to see the hot spring source along with all the hot spring hotels around the area. We also went to Shilin Night Market again, this time for some street food. Nothing too outrageous or exciting, just chilling with my parents for the most part.

Day 4
Last day was very slow and mellow – visit to the Maritime Museum plus 2 tourist traps (which we cleverly avoided) and getting to the airport before 5pm for a 7 pm flight. We mostly strolled around the area when other folks in the group are (involuntarily or happily) stuck in tourist trap. There’s usually no other shops but 7-eleven. So we’d self-entertain by going through the interesting merchandises; one of the tourist traps also happens to be by the river bank, and we found a way through the back street to go up a bit for nice breeze and a view.

First 5 Days in Hong Kong

Day 1
Left Seattle for a 2-week visit home last Thursday afternoon. After 20 hours of traveling (with some layover + 1 hour delay in Narita, Tokyo), I finally got home after midnight (Friday). Kicked off the vacation with a 20km cycling trip to and from Tai Po and Wu Kai Sha. We biked along Shing Mun River, where there are a couple of boat houses for rowing as well as dragon boating and canoeing, kayaking. Swung by offices to see if there’s an opportunity for a drop-in row. Left some contact info and haven’t heard quite yet. Probably won’t get a chance; they seem to be quite a closed community and requires memberships, etc to be involved. Had lunch at a road side restaurant: got dim sum and beef stir fry noodles and started to head back. Thighs were super sore that evening; in lots of pain when we went out for dinner at a fancy modern Vietnamese restaurant called Rice Paper and browsed around shops in the mall (ordered transition lenses for Uv protection). Applied lots of Ben Gay and went to bed early.

Day 2
Mostly recovered on Sunday. Visited ancestor’s grave Sunday morning before heading to dim sum lunch with Ki suk suk and family at Yau Yat Chuen. Went home for rest afterwards and went out again for dinner @ Harbor City’s Habitu, a fancy Italian restaurant by the (not very romantic) pier. Then met up with Elaine and Dawn for drinks (white wine) at Spasso, a fancy lounge resturant with outdoor seating. Talked lots till 11:30 when they are closing, and decided to head over to Dawn’s to chat through the night. Caught up on some junk food from the convenience store as well. Slept for 2 hours at 5 am and had breakfast with Dawn before heading home Monday morning.

Day 3
Monday morning went with Mom to her new gym for an Easy step class; quite hilarious. the instructor was awesomely energetic and funny. The class was fun even though neither me nor my mom could quite follow all the steps and the turns plus enthusiastic poses. Definitely sweated out.

A visit to Hong Kong in April is definitely quite a change than ones during December/ x’mas. Not only is it warmer (from 10 – 15 degree celcius, to 20+), it’s also much much more humid (98% humidity) which makes it all the more (to put dramatically) suffocating. Perhaps also due to the humidity and warm weather, it also seems a lot more smoggy. It’s been almost always gray sky because of the smog. Lots of smokers every where; didn’t help that it’s also a more populated city. It’s more comfortable when we were out cycling, with nice breeze and fresher air.

Went to a shanghai restaurant (a chain with branches all over Asia called Jade something…) for lunch after gym. Then mom took off to get Susan’s watches fixed while I stayed in TST for some browsing (or as I call it, ‘re-discovering’ the city). Didn’t really buy anything (other than a few small things from Muji); lots of shops with lots of little knic knacs, nothing too interesting to buy. Mostly just go into tiny shopping complexes and spin up the stairs, window shop through each level and spin back out. Cosmetic stores (and consumer electronics, and just about anywhere else) are constantly packed with tourists from mainland China. Apparently they like to come to Hong Kong and stock up as the RMB (Chinese currency) is now more worthy than HK$ :’( (RMB$1 = HK$0.8) A bit turned off by the crowd (and thus lack of service staff attention) so didn’t really stay any where mostly). Totally crashed in bed before dinner and blurred through my first home cooked dinner before some more sleep right after. roasted pork and sai yeung choi soup were delicious *sleepy eyes*

Day 4
Tuesday went to gym again for ‘stretch it out’ with mom. Kinda lame. Yoga class with lots of people who ache even from sitting, before putting leg over head. Lunch at Arirong, our favorite old time Korean restaurant. Checked out digital cameras, sales at Fortress (electronic store) recommends Olympus stylus 7040 for my all weather-proof and panoramic function requirement. HK$2200 for the 5x optical zoom version; $300 – $400 more for the 7x one. Seems a bit expensive especially I’m probably taking dad’s ‘spare’ camera, Fujifilm Finepix s1000 fd, but it’s too bulky for every day use. So, still thinking. Got my new lenses and went off to more rediscovering in Yau Ma Tei/ Mong Kok with mom. Didn’t really get to take time looking at things as mom has never been to those little shopping complexes filled with teenagers and not very comfortable. Got lots of fruits along the way. Headed off home soon to get ready for running class in Kowloon Bay at 7 pm.

Running class turns out to be a lot of fun. Did an 800m warm up run around the tracks with mom, then followed the basic class for posture practices. Then mom accompanied me for the time trial for 400m, 800m, 1000m. Following mom’s pace helped me finished them all comfortably at approx. 60% effort. Time is probably not great but I’m glad I didn’t keel over and not finish 1000m. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it’d be and group/ class running turned out to be quite fun as there are others to chat with and cheer on. Fridays they would practice long runs on streets. I wouldn’t go to any both because I’d die if I try and because we’re off to Taipei this Friday and I’ll be back in Seattle the next. May go back for another Tuesday track run next week :) Home cooked meal around 10 pm. Hot soup was awesome.

Day 5
Mom’s taking kung kung to his doctor’s appointment and speech therapy today so I get some time off from daily exercises and will be heading off to CWB in the afternoon with Dawn. Hopefully would get to buy some pretty clothes or what not. More home cooked meal in the evening.

Had an Awesome Birthday

Happy birthday to me! Yesterday was awesome (despite a bit of angst in between, but what’s high in life if there’s no low?). Got up to row in the morning. Weather was (relatively) nice, sun was out (a bit) and it wasn’t raining. We had 2 quads and a double out, rowed through the cut and back. I stroked for my quad yesterday, quite rare as I typically bow and cox in quads (come to think of it, even more rare is for me to be in 2 or 3 seat). Felt pretty good to lead overall.

Digits were a little frozen after rowing so we went to Le Fournil’s with our rowing buddies/ classmates for a Mocha to get warmed up. Gossiped a bit about somebody who got blacklisted from a class. It’s a very strange scene, since people are typically very nice and friendly in the rowing world.

We then went over to OP’s for brunch. She made pancakes and waffles with fruits and we brought over bacon and sausages and eggs and made some omelets. Invited Adriana too. OP also made parfait but we were pretty stuffed after numerous pancakes and waffles and eggs, so I just had one :D Spent the rest of the afternoon getting the remaining accommodations for Puerto Rico and Florida booked, while watching Battle of the Wedding Planners on TLC and mimicking their evil laughs. Then we went to Target so Ani can do his returns and we picked out a couple of games (Funglish and Madgab) for the night. Rushed home got changed vaccummed up broken bulb and dashed over to Kingfish Cafe for dinner. We had drinks and chatted during the 1.5 – 2 hour wait (they don’t take reservations). Food was DELICIOSO and portions are good enough to feed 4. Mac and Cheese hmmmmmmm Thank you kutti for ordering a side. Even though it’s supposed to have onions and peppers (gagh) I only got bites of cheeeeeessseee and macaroni. yuums! and My gumbo was super tasty and gigantic. Barely took a tip of the iceberg.

Hula and Nanna got me gift cert. to JL Racing :D :D

We went to Susan’s for cake and Funglish afterwards. Cake was chocolate with custard filling super tastttty and Funglish was hilarious. We had a good time.

Woke up this morning thinking it was Monday and dreading a bit about what to wear to work and why I didn’t set my usual 6:30 am alarm. Then my 7:00am alarm came on and I suddenly remember that’s the alarm for rowing, i.e. IT’S SUNDAY! yaaaaaaay. Thank god for Sunday.

Had a good row this morning. We had 3 singles in the class, rowed out to Lake Union all the way through Fremont Bridge and down the channel. Water is sooooo calm once we passed Gasworks park and just glassy after the Fremont bridge. It was beautiful. We got some really good practice in. My hands didn’t freeze today, probably also because I was busy rowing around :D It started drizzling when we were heading back from Fremont, but overall it’s a nice morning.

Hmmmmm

….this whole bathroom sink pipe burst thing…

still couldn’t decide whether it’s lucky or not lucky. Lucky that Peter is around to discover it and rescue with Ben. Lucky that it’s FROM my apartment, not INTO my apartment (sorry neighbor). Lucky ( ? ) that I’ll be out while (hopefully) Ben works to get the pipe fixed and carpet cleaned. Lucky that Ani would also be around to help. Lucky that I don’t really have to deal with it at all.

Unlucky that it burst. Unlucky that some of the stuff is probably wet. Unlucky ( ? ) that there isn’t anything I can do about it, really.

I’ll have to throw a thank-you-for-rescuing-my-apartment feast when I return from California. So many favors to ask…

Meanwhile, I finally got my VS package delivered. Somehow I was brilliant enough at the time of order to have it delivered to my office instead of my home. Random pleasant surprises that I plant for myself here and there. I continue to do logical planning without much conscious decision. It just all happens on the back of my head. I guess it’s by design.

Special from Bottomline Secrets

How to Be Happy When You Have Every Reason Not to Be

I found this article insightful and true. If you are a big worrier and stresser like I am, adopting Scott’s guidelines would keep you much happier, so you can focus on the more important things in life, like happiness and companionship. The following two particularly ring the bell for me.

All problems are temporary. Even without stressing out, problems would resolve themselves, one way or another, eventually. Give it a week or two, the solution would reveal itself. Rather than killing yourself (and likely others around you) trying to figure it all out, put it down for a while. It’s all temporary, and unimportant as you look back later in life.

Smile. It’s true, smiling, even when you don’t feel like it, and keep smiling until you feel it, would free you from the burden.

Adding my 2 cents, particularly from experience interacting with people:

Don’t let other people’s frustration bring you down. They may be frustrated at you personally (or not), either way, don’t let it affect you. It’s their problem that they can’t handle the situation. They shouldn’t be spreading the negativity since it is not productive towards solving any problem. You would also come out appearing so much more professional and graceful when you’re taking over and handling the situation calmly.

Had a Good Weekend

Hung out over at the Blue House on Friday night with Susan, Hula and Nanna. We had sprite can chicken and burgers on the BBQ. Susan and I also joined forces in playing the Ravman Raving Rabbids game on Wii which was totally hilarious. I’m awesome at the song/ rhythm games where Susan almost conquered the wild hog-riding game, in which we eventually got stuck and decided to call it a night.

On Saturday I had a small group over for housewarming. Hula/ Nanna/ OP/ Adriana gave me a pot of flowers (called lavender…nightingale) which is really pretty and a real plant that I haven’t had for a really long time. They also got me my favorite instant Mac & Cheese in Costco size, something that Ani has pulled me away from every time we visited Costco lol. It would be an awesome backup food, in case we got stuck in the apartment for a period of time. Shameek brought over awesome sake which a few of us enjoyed along with games of Jenga. We started with the conservative ‘remove sides only’ rule, and proceed on with several players removing blocks at a time and eventually went nutso over the game. It was good fun.

After the housewarming party, we went to Randy’s birthday party for a girl named Valerie. The party turned out to be better than I was expecting. Guess it’s the good music and the fact that I haven’t been out for a while that made it more enjoyable.

Sunday afternoon we went to OP’s for Easter brunch which was totally yum. She made poached egg/ egg Benedict and Ham and spinach with English muffin and I brought over Zucchinis as well. Checked out her new flat screen HDTV and hung out with Rex after haven’t seen him for a couple of weeks.

Also caught up on sleep over the weekend after not sleeping so well in the new apartment for 5 days. Was very nice.

Looking forward to his return in a few days.

First Official Night at My New Apartment

After the big move last Saturday, and countless shifting of stuff from Wallingford over to my new apartment in Eastlake, couple of shopping trips, and several nights of slow unpacking, I am finally staying over for the very first time.

So far so good.

Despite the fact that there’re still boxes lying around the place, the kitchen looks too clean, and the shower curtain rod is still at risk of falling down any time, that I have 2 beds in my bedroom and I’m typing while sitting on my little bed… I’m overcoming my fear and angst against the new apartment and the new furniture (including the stupid bed scam that I got into).

Skiing at Crystal Mountain with all my brand new gears tomorrow with sister. o so exciting~ It’s gonna be sunny!!

I’m still… not sleeping yet. Have to be up in 5 hours…
